S.M.A.R.T. Fail

Hi,

 

I am hoping some of you ran into this issue, I am using a Surface Pro 128  and was downloading some utilities and came up with some interesting findings, First off the drive is a Samsung MZMPC128HBFU-000MV

 

1) SeaTools For Windows Failed all 6 hard drive tests including S.M.A.R.T.

2) SpeedFan 4.50 Passed the Short and Extended tests

3) SiSoftware Sandra Passed S.M.A.R.T.

 

I contacted Microsoft and will be getting a replacement Surface Pro 128 but I found it kind of odd that only 1 of 3 reported any issues. Has anyone had this happen before or would be able to point me to some other diagnostic tools?

Update did the web support thing with Microsoft and the guy seemed pretty decent until he disconnected the conversation after he told me my HD was bad. I called later and spoke with a female who had me go through refreshing the drive and reinstall all the updates from 8.0 on up (I couldn't help but test the drive before all the updates and it failed SMART again then proceeded to download the updates which failed at 50%. I tried it again and made it to the point that it wanted to reboot to finish installing, and there I was stuck in a black screen for a hour & 1/2 (needless to say its getting RMA'd) well here is the point I'm glad I backed up to an external drive as well as OneDrive because while I didn't know it at the time OneDrive was copying some of my corrupt documents. Hopefully this will save someone a headache in the future. :)

sometimes software don't read SMART tables correctly or even if they read, the understanding they make is pretty bad (like defraggler, when it reads >0 re-allocated sectors as OK when in fact it's a pre-fail, so the drive has problems). The fact that you used Seatools (Samsung HDD is owned by Seagate) and it didn't pass is the best indicator that the drive is bad. What i don't know is why the MS tech support made you go all through that crap since the HDD isn't OK in the first place, it doesn't make any sense at all.

 

Upgrade a Windows 8 to 8.1 when the HDD is reporting problems with the manufacture software?? I would complain to the tech supervisor because he misdiagnose the problem and even made you lose time (and bandwidth).

 

anyway, HDD live and die, that's life. Glad that you are getting a replacement. Don't forget to always backup your stuff, but more importantly, test your backups!
