It looks really nice, but I still prefer the start menu layout from build 9879. The new 9926 start menu feels very messy and unfinished. Your concept improves it a bit, but it's still not quite as nice and streamlined as the start menu from the older builds. Just my personal opinion anyway.

Everything else looks really nice and clean. Good effort! ^^

Thank your for the feedback! I do realize that the Start Menu in build 9926 has a lot of flaws, personally I hate how they implemented the Search Function (Cortana overlaps the Start Menu), the App List is weird to navigate and I dislike the position of the two buttons on the top right ("Power Options" and "Expand").

Could you tell me what you don't like in particular? I'm working hard to make the best Start Menu possible.

On the next mockup I'm thinking to add a Start Menu with horizontal scrolling support (should be optional of course). Thoughts?

Mockups look good, but why did you move the power and remove the expanding toggles on Start? Right clicking isn't something many want to do. You've increased the clicks needed, and reduced discoverability.

Also, "File" on Explorer right next to the Hamburger menu is rather redundant, and no applications do that.

The "Power Options" button at the bottom should be much better for keyboard and mouse users (Windows 7 users are used to have it in that place). As for the "Expand" button, I thought that it's not something that users will use constantly. Anyhow, you can always use the Action Center and click on "Tablet mode" (it takes just 2 clicks).

Also, "File" on Explorer right next to the Hamburger is just the app title, to be fair every Windows 10 app do this because it's part of the title bar, anyhow in my mockups I'm using "Chromeless Titlebars" (it's a new API of Windows 10 apps - http://blog.thomasnigro.fr/2015/02/11/exploring-w10-apis-windows-and-titlebar/)

Looks great, I gave it 3 votes and I hope it inspires MS to improve everything.

One thing that I would also suggest is having a new preview system for the File Manager is a new preview system. The current preview system is a mess because things will only preview if you associate them with a default application that has a preview handler (for example, video files associated with the modern video application on Windows 8 and Windows 10 will not preview in the file manager unless you change the default application to open it to Windows Media Player). Another issue is that every different preview handler uses a slightly different UI which is inconsistent for the user. I think a new File Manager should have a unified preview handler which by default supports common file formats, codes/wrappers, and is not dependent on the default application used to open the file.

One suggestion I would give for the new Start Menu is to allow people to pin favorite places and apps to the left side of Start, as opposed to having them be automatically chosen at all times.

For business point of view packaging is on top priority. Even average products are best sold with good looking packaged products. Its fact and you can't overlook it.
For windows OS UI and user experience theme and looks are product's packaging. I know programmers do not give any importance to it but what percentage are programmers out of total windows users? more than 90 percent users are naive and they wants a good looking windows on their PC.

MS should incorporate the windows 7 like UI or even better keeping all goodness of performance present in windows 10 and I bet the coming windows will be best selling OS ever.

Thank you so much for the votes! Also, your feedback is quite interesting (maybe I'll design something for it), you should post your idea on UserVoice :)

I don't know, I personally think Windows 8 packaging was quite nice (even though they were a bit confusing).

Windows is usually sold with a new device (only geeks and IT managers buy retail copies).

Anyhow I agree with you, packaging of any product is important for its success!

I usually don't care much for concepts like this but you did a really good job. The file explorer in particular is very practical while bringing it up to modern standards. I am not a huge fan of the transparency though. I know many like it, but I personally find it more distracting.

So since the ribbon is removed, are all the commands it held, shoved back into drop down menus?

I hope not. Those are dead, gone, and buried in the past as far as Microsoft is concerned.

I just noticed your mockups are also curiously missing the full screen toggle on the apps.

Thanks for the suggestion, I decided to put it submit it UserVoice; hopefully it gets enough votes that it is actually implemented or at least considered. The link is below if you or anyone else here is interested in voting for this one :D

Thanks! Well, as regards the transparency... I guess nobody will complain if it's optional.

I just added tabs support check it out!

Drop down menus? Heck no!

Yeah, added it in latest mockup! (totally forgot it!)

Might need to fix the typo "Wather" on the Start Menu tile ... in order to be taken more seriously :)

Thanks for putting this together.

Oops! Sorry I'll fix that!

I'm sure there are people that would love a Windows 10 Phone concept. I have a iOS device so im happy with that. :p
I would say however keep plugging the concepts you made, they are really really good :)

Good, lol.  But then where are they?  Because I see, "Home", "Share", "View", etc, but if the ribbon was removed like you said in the first post, and they're not drop downs menus, what happens when you click them?.

Interesting idea with the horizontal scrolling.

I like how your start menu moved the power button to the left column again, because that's where it should be.

I think there should be a full-screen button, and it should also be in the left column as well, perhaps at the top towards the right of where the user name is located. Right-clicking for full-screen actually isn't a bad idea either though.

In the tiles area, there should be less space around the edge, like the tiles should come closer to the edge of the actual start menu "box".

The search box really should be in the start menu, not the task bar, and I think having Cortana integrated in the start menu (in the left column) would

really fit nicely.

The start menu in builds 9879 and earlier had the layout down perfectly I think. Everything just seemed to fit together nicely and it was more compact-looking. Either that or it could be that I've just grown used to it from using it for several months. The start menu in build 9926 kinda threw me off maybe. xD

As far as the rest of the mockup goes, I LOVE how you made the explorer. It's very clean looking. :3
