Facebook testing new "Moments" app for limited sharing of timeline content

It looks like Facebook is once again looking to launch a separate app designed for a particular feature. This time it’s called “Moments” and it will supposedly allow users to share content with only a select group of people.

You may be thinking that you can already do that by using lists or changing the visibility settings on your timeline posts. But according to TechCrunch who are reporting on this, the whole idea behind Moments is to streamline that experience so more people benefit from it.

The app, which is currently being dogfooded to Facebook employees, will allow users to designate a small number of people, say family and friends, as the sole recipients of their timeline posts. This should, in theory, increase privacy and greatly limit those moments when people inadvertently share too much with the rest of the world. And in case this sounds familiar, it’s because Path already tried this model, with limited success.

Another interesting use case for Moments would be a stand-alone app that would allow you to easily manage and interact with your Facebook Groups. Mark Zuckerberg is quoted as saying this is certainly of interest to them, and we may see this vision come to market through Moments.

Of course you should take this with a grain of salt. Though the app is real and it is being tested, that doesn’t mean it will actually launch. Moments may be renamed, revamped, redesigned or repurposed before it ever sees the light of day.

What do you think? Is Moments something you’d be open to using or is Facebook launching too many apps for features already available on their main one?
