How to protect your Microsoft account if you get hacked

Protecting your Microsoft Account should be high on your priority list as it is typically linked to credit cards and of course, your email. To help protect your account, Microsoft has a recovery code feature that you can use in the event that your account is compromised but you need to set it up today.

Here is how it works, using this feature, Microsoft will generate a code that you can use in the event that your account credentials cannot be recovered or if your account is taken over by an unauthorized person. If you have this code and your account has been hacked, it can be used to regain access to your content.

But, and this is a very important point, you must generate the recovery code before your account is compromised. This feature is a forward looking way to protect your account which means that you need to obtain your code right now.

To get your code, follow the steps below:

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account.
  2. Under Recovery Code, tap or click Set up.
  3. If you've created a recovery code before, your screen will say Replace instead. Tap or click Replace.
  4. Tap or click Print.

After following these steps, you will have your code to recover your account if someone or something were to happen to it in the future.

The above steps will take only a minute or two and will help protect your account. Think of this feature as an insurance policy for your account as it allows you to regain access at any point in the future.
