Microsoft has stopped distributing yet another patch from Windows Update due to unusual behaviour.
On last week's Patch Tuesday, Microsoft released an update aiming to introduce SHA-2 hashing algorithm in Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2. However, it seems the patch has been creating issues for users as Microsoft has announced that it will be withdrawing the update while it is “investigating behavior associated with this update."
According to the Technet security advisory, the aging SHA-1 hashing algorithm is vulnerable to attacks and isn't a recommended practice. To address this issue Microsoft intended to update Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2. But now, users will have to wait till the company assesses and fixes the various issues before re-releasing the update.
The affected operating systems include all variants of Windows 7 with SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1. Users who have installed the KB2949927 update can follow steps provided at Microsoft's site to remove the update.
