Sony to launch Xperia Z3 flagship and ultra-thin mini-tablet this week

Last week, details emerged of the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, Sony's upcoming mini-tablet that includes some pretty impressive specs, including an 8-inch Full HD (1920x1080px) display, Snapdragon 801 chipset, 3GB of RAM and 4G LTE connectivity.

The tablet will be one of numerous devices to be launched by the company at this month's IFA trade show in Berlin, and is said to be the 'thinnest and lightest waterproof tablet in the world', according to 9to5Google, which reports that it will be just 6.4mm-thick.

Alongside that device, three new smartphones are expected to be unveiled, including the new Xperia Z3 flagship. The handset will reportedly feature similar internal specs to the Z3 Tablet Compact, including its quad-core 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 chipset and 3GB of RAM, along with a 5.2-inch Triluminos display.

Sony's Z3 Compact handset, meanwhile, looks set to buck the trend of 'mini' smartphone versions, by featuring near-identical specs to its bigger brother, squeezed into a slightly smaller body. While many other manufacturers release mini versions of their flagships with drastically reduced specs - compare the inferior features of the Galaxy S5 mini to the full-size Samsung Galaxy S5, for example - the only change in the Z3 Compact's specs will be a smaller, lower-resolution display: 4.7-inches at 1280x720px.

The final addition to Sony's range this week will be one for those on a budget. The Xperia E3 is said to include a quad-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 chipset and either 1.5GB or 2GB of RAM, along with a 4.8-inch HD (1280x720px) display. It is expected to be priced under $300 when it goes on sale later this year.
