Xiaomi unveils its latest flagship smartphones, the Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus

Earlier this year, Xiaomi was one of the first smartphone makers to unveil a Snapdragon 820-powered flagship smartphone with the Mi 5. Now, the company has unveiled two new flagship devices, the Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus, powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 821 chipset as speculated recently.

Both the smartphones offer top-of-the-line hardware specifications at a very competitive price. In addition to an upgraded chipset, Xiaomi has also bumped up few other internals to make the smartphones worthy alternatives to latest offerings from the likes of Apple and Samsung.

The hardware specifications of the devices are as follows:

Mi 5s

  • 5.15-inch IPS LCD with 1920x1080 (1080p) resolution covered with 2.5D curved glass
  • Snapdragon 821 Processor, Quick Charge 3.0
  • 3GB RAM + 64GB ROM / 4GB RAM+ 128 GB ROM
  • 12-megapixel f/2.0 rear camera with phase detect autofocus, HDR, 1/2.3" sensor
  • 4-megapixel front camera with f/2.0 lens, 1/3" sensor size, 2µm pixel size
  • 3200 mAh battery
  • Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth 4.2, 4G LTE
  • USB Type C

Mi 5s Plus

  • 5.7-inch IPS LCD with 1920x1080 (1080p) resolution covered with 2.5D curved glass
  • Snapdragon 821 Processor, Quick Charge 3.0
  • 4GB RAM + 64GB ROM / 6GB RAM+ 128 GB ROM
  • 13-megapixel dual rear cameras with phase detect autofocus, HDR, 1/2.3" sensor
  • 4-megapixel front camera with f/2.0 lens, 1/3" sensor size, 2µm pixel size
  • 3800 mAh battery
  • Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth 4.2, 4G LTE
  • USB Type C

Both the devices feature fingerprint sensors, which Xiaomi claims to be the fastest. Additionally, the company has also compared the cameras of the smartphones with the latest generation of the iPhone, but it remains to be seen whether it holds true.

The base variant of the Mi 5s with 3GB RAM and 64GB ROM is priced at¥1999 ($299) while the 4GB RAM and 128GB ROM variant is priced at¥2299 ($345). On the other hand, the base variant of the Mi 5s Plus with 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM is priced at¥2299 ($344) while the 6GB RAM and 128GB ROM variant is priced at¥2599 ($389).

Xiaomi hasn't revealed the pricing or availability of the devices for other markets yet, but is expected to do so over the coming months.
