Nintendo announces free update and paid DLC for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

During its Direct presentation today, Nintendo announced that the sandbox-style platformer Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is getting a free update on the Nintendo Switch, as well as some paid DLC content. Some of the content can be had today, but most of it will come at a later date.

For those unaware, Captain Toad is a character that was first introduced in the Super Mario Galaxy games, and who gained a bigger role in Super Mario 3D World. This prompted Nintendo to make a standalone title around the character's adventure in the form of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. The game debuted on the Wii U, but was ported to the Nintendo 3DS and Switch last year. Players have to guide Captain Toad through a series of sandbox-style levels, collecting hidden diamonds and coins along the way. One of the bigger differences from typical Mario games is that the character can't jump, which makes for different kinds of challenges.

The new content announced today is exclusive to the Nintendo Switch version of the game, and it starts with a free update coming out later today. The update adds a true multiplayer mode, allowing two people to explore levels together. Previously, a second player could only help the main protagonist by throwing objects at enemies to stun them.

Nintendo also announced new paid downloadable content for the game, adding 18 new challenges and five new courses, which include a sunken ship and a kingdom of sweets. Some existing courses will have new objectives to fulfill in existing courses, some specifically targetting multiplayer mode. The DLC pack will also be available to buy later today, and one of the new courses will immediately be available. The rest of the content will be launched on March 14.
