In November, Microsoft announced the Windows 8 Apps For Social Good contest, for both Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 apps. Microsoft wanted to honor app developers that created software designed to help people, rather than just earn a profit.
Today, Microsoft announced the three winners of the contest on its Corporate Citizens blog. The app that won the People's Choice award, based on votes on the contest website, was YumvY, a Windows 8 app designed to help others cook their own meals at home. The programmer of the app, Sari Louis from Reston, Virginia, created YumvY as a way to help fight obesity in others. Louis will receive $10,000 from Microsoft for winning the People's Choice award.
A panel of judges picked the best Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 apps in the Apps for Social Good contest. For the Windows Phone 8 division, the judges picked Health Center, made by Lance Siedman of Las Vegas as a way to help others find their medications. The Windows 8 app winner was Eatfindr, an app made by Cameron Preston of Seattle with the objective to find nearby healthy restaurants. Siedman and Preston will each receive $15,000 for their efforts.
