Amazon is serious about finding new ways to help you pay for online goods. Just a few days ago, the company announced that you can pay your Capital One bill through devices running its Alexa AI. Now, Amazon is testing a new payment authorization process that will enable you to pay for online goods by taking a selfie.
Yes, you read that right. Your front-facing camera on your smartphone or tablet could one day be used as authorization for payment.
Amazon feels that allowing users to authorize payments through facial recognition instead of typing in passwords is a better process in terms of security. This would remove the need to type in passwords, reducing the chances that someone could either see you type in a password or hack a password-storing app and gain access to your sensitive data .
Amazon says that this is only the first step down this authorization road. The company plans to expand its biometric-based system by including other technologies like 3D image detecting. We could eventually see this system expand beyond simple online purchases as Amazon hopes that this kind of authorization could expand to purchases in places like grocery stores and gas stations.
