The BBC has released a new 'child-friendly' version of its iPlayer app, promising a safe and secure environment for children to enjoy its shows. The app offers access to over 10,000 episodes, including new and old content from CBBC, for older children; and CBeebies, for its youngest viewers.
The BBC says that while their children enjoy the iPlayer Kids app, "parents can be confident they're watching shows appropriate for their age and free from adverts". Alice Webb, director of BBC Children's emphasized the importance of this, noting that it's "free of charge, free from commercial influence".
The BBC says that the app is "guaranteed to be free of programming aimed at adults", ensuring that children aren't presented with content that they shouldn't be seeing. The Beeb produces and commissions more children's programming than any other UK broadcaster, with over 8,000 hours of new content added each year.
BBC iPlayer Kids will allow parents and children to watch content on-demand, and they can even download shows over Wi-Fi to their devices. The content can then be stored and watched for up to 30 days, so kids can even watch their favorite shows when they're on holiday - which is sure to keep their parents happy too.
The new BBC iPlayer Kids is available to download now, free for iOS, Android and Amazon Fire devices. Sadly, for owners of Windows phones, tablets and PCs, there's no version of the app available for those devices.
The app is intended for UK viewers only; the BBC hasn't yet revealed any plans to launch an international version of the app for audiences outside of the UK.
