CD Projekt RED has always promised major story expansions to its RPG Cyberpunk 2077, but the notorious launch issues and subsequent focus on fixes pushed the original roadmaps forward multiple times. Still, development of at least one expansion has continued internally. Today, CD Projekt RED confirmed this new piece of story content will drop in 2023.

The announcement arrived during CD Projekt's latest earnings call, where studio president Adam Kicinski said multiple teams are involved in the development of this expansion. It's a rather long wait, especially compared to The Witcher 3's schedule that had its two highly acclaimed expansions drop almost within a year of the base game's launch.

It's unclear if fans will receive more story content to journey into following this unnamed expansion's release. No details on the narrative or setting have been revealed yet, but the studio promised more details will come later this year.

The news arrives alongside the reveal of hefty sales figures for the futuristic RPG, which now stands at 18 million across all platforms. The title recently received its long-time-coming 'next-gen' upgrade for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 (and PC), which also came with major bug fixes and gameplay tweaks for providing a better experience. The studio has confirmed regular updates, and minor DLC drops, aren't stopping either.

The expansion is being developed on CD Projekt's in-house engine REDengine just like the base game. However, for future projects, like the next Witcher entry, the studio is moving to Unreal Engine 5.
