Destiny 2 will be going free-to-play and also coming to Steam, per leak [Update]

Destiny 2 may be about to undergo a massive change, but a leak may have ruined the surprise. In a now pulled Engadget article that was made public before its time, it was revealed that just as the upcoming Shadowkeep expansion lands on September 17, the popular shooter will be going free-to-play.

Titled Destiny 2: New Light, this free-to-play version will contain full base game as well as all of the year one content. Later expansions will be available as separate individual purchases for free-to-play players.

The article also confirms the game will finally be coming to Steam, as well as Google Stadia, ditching Blizzard's Battle.net client exclusivity on PC. Bungie and Activision's partnership came to an end earlier this year, so coming to new platforms is now solely Bungie's decision as an independent developer.

And speaking of platforms, a new cross-save feature will also be made available according to the leak, letting players across PC and Xbox One access their characters from either platform. Not unexpectedly, this feature won't be available to PlayStation 4 players. The studio won't be doing any more platform-exclusive content going forwards either.

Bungie has a Destiny 2 stream lined up to go live later today at 10AM PT, so this is when we will probably see official announcements come through. Still, until then, take this leak with a grain of salt.

UPDATE: The leak happened to be mostly correct, with Bungie confirming almost all of the new features mentioned above that's landing on September 17. However, cross-save was confirmed to be available on PlayStation 4 as well, so no platform will be left behind.

The Shadowkeep expansion will cost $35, and starting with it, all expansions will be playable as standalone experiences, letting new players jump in without needing any characters that have played older seasons.

The new Steam version seems to be where Bungie is focusing all its PC efforts, as the Shadowkeep expansion won't even be available on Battle.net. Players will also be able to transfer all of their purchased content from Battle.net over to Steam as the launch gets closer.
