CES 2017 is around the corner and news of what is to be seen there are already arriving. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, or FCA, has released a joint statement with Google to detail the concept of their implementation of the Uconnect interface over Android.
Uconnect has been around for some time powering Chrysler's connected car systems with its well-known interface. In an attempt to create the next generation of those systems, FCA has partnered with Google to use the Android open-source platform to harness its capabilities, as stated by Chris Barman, Head of Electrical Engineering at FCA:
“With Android, we are able to maintain our unique and intuitive Uconnect user interface, all while integrating our easy-to-use systems with Android’s features and ecosystem of applications.”
FCA plans to hold a hands-on concept demonstration at CES 2017 on a Chrysler 300 sedan running the latest version of Android, 7.0 Nougat. It expects to show a seamless use of Google Assistant and Google Maps, besides other popular Android apps.
No timeline for the implementation of the new infotainment system on commercial vehicles was given at this time.
