Google formally announced today that it is dropping support for the Daydream VR software. Along with this announcement, its companion mobile app is also losing support with Android 11.
The news does not entirely come as a surprise. Late last year, Google stopped selling the Daydream View VR headset a day after it announced the Pixel 4 series and other Made By Google hardware. Nonetheless, the service remains accessible to existing users, albeit with no further software or security updates moving forward. Also, you can still use the Daydream headset and controller to view VR content.
As for the Daydream app, Google warns users that it may no longer work properly on smartphones running Android 11. That said, some Daydream third-party apps and experiences will remain in place as standalone apps. Users who use those apps will also retain their account information or functionality even if Daydream is no longer supported.
There have been a few indications that suggested the ultimate demise of Daydream. In June of last year, the search giant shuttered the Google Play Movies & TV app for its Daydream VR platform, as per Variety. The Pixel 4 devices also didn't have Daydream support.
