Huawei introduces a new MateBook X and an AMD-powered MateBook 14

MateBook X

A few weeks ago, we reported that Huawei was refreshing its MateBook X lineup of Windows 10 PCs; that announcement was for China, but now it's being announced for all. Moreover, the Shenzhen firm is introducing a new MateBook 14.

First up is the thin and light MateBook X, which hasn't been refreshed since it had seventh-generation Intel processors in 2017. It now has Intel's 10th-gen 'Comet Lake' chips, but that's not all. Huawei has removed the metal frame around the screen for an improved screen-to-body ratio, and the resolution os the display is improved with a 3000x2000 resolution. The display also now has touch, and 400-nit brightness.

Thanks to the 90% screen-to-body ratio, the webcam has been moved to the keyboard, like we've seen from the MateBook X Pro. This allows it to serve as a privacy guard for the camera.

The MateBook X has a haptic trackpad, and the keyboard has full 1.3mm key travel. Things kept from the previous version are the excellent fingerprint sensor that scans your fingerprint when you first press it, a premium audio experience with four sound modes, and of course, a fanless design. It still only has two USB Type-C ports, but now you can charge through both of them. The MateBook X comes in Silver Frost and Forest Green.

And then there's the MateBook 14. MateBook is meant to be more mainstream to high end, while MateBook X is meant to be premium. But the new MateBook 14 is meant to be powerful with up to an AMD Ryzen 7 4800H, an octa-core processor with 16 threads and for the sake of this product, a 35W TDP.

The MateBook 14 also sports a 3:2 display, although this one is 2160x1440, and it weighs in at 1.49kg. It uses CNC diamond cut anodized aluminum, and Huawei is promising a 90% screen-to-body ratio on that one too.

All of the new laptops are coming in October. For the MateBookX, both models come with 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD, and the Core i5-10210U model costs €1,599, while the Core i7-10510U model costs €1,799. For the MateBook 14, the base model has a Ryzen 5 4600H, 8GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD for €849, and you can upgrade that to 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD for €949. And for €1,049, you can get a Ryzen 7 4800H, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD.
