New firmware is rolling out to the Surface Pro 3 - here's what's new

Microsoft today released a new firmware update for the Surface Pro 3, bringing a couple of improvements to the device. It's the first since April 20, and it's impressive to see the company continuing to update a device so frequently that's over three years old.

The update only contains a couple of fixes:

Windows Update History Name Device Manager Name
Surface – Firmware – 38.13.50.0

Surface Pro Embedded Controller Firmware

  • 38.13.50.0 improves battery life during sleep.
Surface – Firmware – 3.11.2150.0

Surface Pro UEFI

  • 3.11.2150.0 improves PXE performance on IPv6.

Microsoft says that today's update includes improvements to reliability and battery life, with no impact on security, connectivity, compatibility, or performance.

One thing that's still notably missing is support for the new Surface Pen, which just became available for pre-order. The update should bring support for the Pen's tilting features, assuming that Microsoft wants to continue to support the aging device, and there's no reason that it shouldn't.

If for some reason, you don't want to grab today's update through Windows Update, you can also download it manually here.
