Power BI On-premises data gateway gets October update

Last week, Microsoft released a set of new powershell cmdlets for Power BI On-premises data gateway. A few weeks before that, tech giant's September release for the service was rolled out, though it didn't bring many changes to the existing version, essentially only updating the mashup engine.

Now, Microsoft has unveiled the October update for the Power BI On-premises data gateway, bumping the service up to version 3000.10.232. The list of changes this time around is a bit more extensive, and reads as follows:

  • Public Preview of Kerberos based Single Sign-On (SSO) for
    • SAP BW Message Server
    • Oracle
  • Skip test connection for Web or OData
  • October Version of the mashup engine
  • Performance Monitoring Improvements
  • Improved Gateway Documentation

To expand on each of these changes, Kerberos-powered SSO can now be utilized to connect to SAP BW Message Server and Oracle as well. Selecting either of the two as data source types for new gateways should provide the option to use SSO via Kerberos for DirectQuery queries, as shown in the image on the side. Additionally, the 'Skip test connection' feature - previously enabled for On-premises Power BI data sources - is now available to use with Web and OData data sources.

Moving on, the updated mashup engine brings it in line with the October release for Power BI Desktop. In other words, reports being published, or getting refreshed via the gateway, will now go through the same query execution logic/runtime as in the Desktop version. Gateway documentation has also been streamlined based on user feedback. There are now separate webpages for On-premises data gateway content specific to Power BI and content that applies to other services the gateway supports.

Finally, an additional file - the Query start report - has been introduced to improve performance monitoring. It will contain the Query start time, as well as the query text. As such, users won't need to perform any additional logging to get actual query text. An updated version of the Performance monitoring template is also available now, offering not only the aforementioned performance monitoring improvements in the Query start report, but new visuals as well.
