Atari hits the pause button on Ataribox pre-order plans

Atari announced earlier this week that its new console, Ataribox, will be available for pre-order starting today, with a limited amount of early birds even getting a discount. However, it seems that these plans have been called off entirely.

In a newsletter that was sent today, the company announced that "it is taking more time to create the platform and ecosystem the Atari community deserves," due to it not being able to complete "one key element."

Atari did not say what exactly is this key element that caused the seemingly last-minute delay, but it added that "Building Ataribox is incredibly important to us and we will do whatever it takes to be sure it is worth the wait."

Furthermore, the announcement said that "An updated launch plan is underway and more detailed information will be available soon." But again, the company did not disclose a timeframe for when will the pre-orders be available.

Not much is known about the innards of the Ataribox, with the company only saying that it will be Linux-based, and will come equipped with a custom AMD CPU with Radeon Graphics, promising a "full PC experience for the TV." We will hopefully get more information on the product when it is finally available to order.
