Microsoft has announced the launch of its new LinkedIn app for Windows 10 PCs. The new desktop app promises users "a richer, more engaging, and connected LinkedIn experience" - but there's no love for Windows phone users, whose options to connect to Microsoft's professional networking platform will soon become far more limited.
"The LinkedIn app for Windows 10 makes it easier than ever to connect to opportunity, work smarter, and tap into your professional potential," the company said today - but it's hard to overlook the fact that the app appears suspiciously similar to the LinkedIn website.
But while it seems to be little more than a web wrapper, the new desktop app does offer support for Windows 10 features, including the ability to pin a Live Tile to the Start menu. More usefully, the app also integrates its notifications into the Windows 10 Action Center, including "new messages, insights on who's viewed your profile, trending news in your industry and other timely highlights on your professional network." Users will have the ability to control which notifications appear in the Action Center.
Unfortunately, there's no love in today's announcement for LinkedIn users who own Windows phones. Last week, the company began emailing users to inform them that its app for Windows phones will be killed off at the end of August, advising them to access LinkedIn via the browser on their devices instead.
The new LinkedIn desktop app will begin rolling out to the Windows Store today, but it won't be immediately available for everyone. "If you're not yet able to download the app," LinkedIn's Hermes Alvarez said, "you will soon, as it will be available to Windows 10 users in all LinkedIn markets by the end of July."
The app will be available in 22 languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese (simplified), Arabic, Danish, Italian, Dutch, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Turkish, Swedish, Chinese (traditional), Czech, Indonesian, Thai, Malay, and Romanian.
