Plex set to add free Lionsgate content to its platform later this year

Plex has announced a new partnership with Lionsgate to bring more ad-supported video content to its platform. The announcement comes just weeks after Plex partnered with Warner Bros. to bring ad-supported video on demand (AVOD) to customers in the United States. Unlike the previous deal, the Lionsgate content will be available to customers worldwide from late 2019.

The ad-supported movies and shows from Lionsgate will be free for all Plex users and will join other content such as web shows, podcasts, and news. While Lionsgate’s library will be available around the globe, there may be some geo-restrictions on a title-to-title basis. Given that the content will be free and available around the world, the fact that some titles will be geo-restricted isn't so bad.

Commenting on the partnership, Keith Valory, CEO of Plex, said:

“Lionsgate is one of the biggest names in the business and we know our millions of users will enjoy free access to their library of movies. Plex caters to the most passionate and discerning media lovers all over the world, so it is important for us to be able to bring great content like this together in one beautiful app for all of our users across the globe.”

As alluded to earlier, the content is not available yet but will rollout in late 2019. No specific month or date has been given by Plex or Lionsgate yet.
